Duration: 2-year contract

The South African Medical Research Council, HIV Prevention Research Unit requires a qualified and experienced Laboratory Manager with managerial acumen to lead the key components of the HPRU multi-faceted laboratory to ensure strict adherence to Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and other laboratory quality standards including South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) and Division of AIDS (DAIDS).

The successful candidate must have extensive laboratory knowledge with scientific leadership, technical and management experience in HIV, diagnostic and research laboratory procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific outcomes based on laboratory methodology and tests
  • Contribute to grants and publications based on laboratory methodology and tests
  • Manage the laboratory systems and outcomes of the Repository, Central Routine Research Laboratory, and 6 research site laboratories.
  • Manage laboratory compliance and adherence to all local and international research studies
  • Manage the laboratory component of the clinical trials, including the set-up of new laboratory analyzers, tests and methods and ensure validation and verification.
  • Develop, manage and update Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and standardize laboratory procedural requirements within the trial and across site laboratories.
  • Prepare all sections of the laboratory for internal and external, local, national and international audits, including South African Health Products Regulatory Agency (SAHPRA), SANAS, Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPD), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and sponsor audits.
  • Manage laboratory quality management activities and EQA/IQC programs
  • Set up laboratory agreements and analytical plans with local and international partners
  • Support local and international partners in developing appropriate quality assurance and quality control systems for all trial-related activities
  • Laboratory resource and asset management
  • Laboratory risk management
  • Laboratory financial management
  • Laboratory document management
  • Laboratory supply chain management
  • Provide mentoring, training, and supervision of laboratory personnel
  • Exhibit commitment to the overall mission and mandate of the Unit and the SAMRC

Core Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in any laboratory science preferably within the HIV field or relevant higher qualification
  • Registered with the HPCSA
  • 5 years laboratory experience with 5 years management experience including management of external partners
  • Experience with SANAS audit requirements
  • Computer literate on Microsoft Excel; Word, Access and PowerPoint

Advantageous:

  • PhD in any laboratory science preferably within the HIV field
  • Certification in GCLP and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Certification
  • A valid certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
