Job Description

Roche in Johannesburg is seeking a Senior Pharmacovigilance (PV) Specialist to be responsible for supporting PV activities to ensure activities are completed consistently in a timely manner in accordance with internal processes and local and international regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Fully proficient in all functions and responsibilities of a PV specialist.
  • Ensures collection, reporting and handling of safety information associated with Roche products is performed according to global Roche and local regulatory requirements within the assigned PV hub coverage areas.
  • Support and act as a deputy PV Hub Manager as needed in defined areas of responsibility, which may fluctuate according to business need.
  • Manages daily workload of hub unit within the department with limited line management responsibilities.


  • Liaise with PV Hub Manager with regards to resources, timelines and issues with quality, reorganizes daily workload based on priority, proactively communicates new issues to management, offers solutions and reports availability to take on new assignments.
  • Trains new staff and mentors less experienced members of the team.
  • Acts as the primary resource for other PV Specialists with regards to answering questions, sharing knowledge and assisting in resolving problems, providing technical support.
  • Ensure readiness for Audits & Inspections as well as effective CAPA development and management relating to hub operational activities.
  • Maintains an understanding of SOPs, Work Instructions, global PV regulations, GCPs and ICH guidelines.

Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborates with Local Safety Responsibles, vendors and other departments in the area of Drug Safety / Pharmacovigilance, acts as primary contact for information regarding assigned tasks and projects.

You, as an ideal candidate, will have the following skills, experience and education:

  • Required Qualification: Health Care Professional Degree (e.g. Pharmacist, Registered Nurse, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Physician assistant, Nurse Practitioner) or Life Science Degree (e.g. BSc Biology, BSc Neuroscience, etc.)
  • Required Experience: Competency demonstrated in the role of a PV specialists (or equivalent) with appropriate experience in Drug Safety/Pharmacovigilance, preferably 3 years or more experience in a safety operations role
  • Other Requirements: Knowledge of global Pharmacovigilance regulatory obligations, and experience in managing cross-country teams and/or having oversight of multiple countries preferred.
  • Travel Requirements – International travel approximately 10 to 20%.
